Originally the steering clutch release bearing retention nut had set screws set into the threads between the nut and plate to keep the nut on tight. While this works well, it is destructive to the threads (especially if you don't take them out!!). Given the level of technology available to us now, would Blue or Red Lock-tite do a good job for this, or should I return to the thread disruption technology of the past? D4 7U.

Have seen little brass disks under set screw to eliminate the damage- very easy to loose. Bob

I just did my d2 clutches this winter and put the set screw back. It was obvious that the bearings had been replaced before by the threads of the other set screws. It's worked for 70 plus years and one thing I know when you change the engineering you become you're own engineer.

Thank you for your replies. Does anyone know if CAT's set screws are self tapping or if you need to tap the hole once it is drilled? Thanks again! Elton

The servicemen reference book indicates drill and tap new holes. I was actually able to line up the old holes that I took the set screws out of and reuse them. Sounds like yours have some damage so new holes would be in order.

YES, damaged enough to need new pressure plates and nuts. That is why I was thinking about lock-tite. Not a big issue to drill and tap. Thanks for your input. Elton

In some older machine tools I have seen a lead ball used under set screws. It compresses without damage to the threads. A piece of solder works well.
