How to id engine in D5

Looking at another D5 for parts and need some help to ID engine. Runs but is consuming water. Tags are missing but the block is stamped 3N73345 below where the serial tag is missing. Believe the tractor to be a 21J model, 5 spd manual tranny. Are all 3N prefixes all 3306? Or is it a D333C? Tractor does not seem new enough for a 3306 but could well of had a transplant sometime in the last 50 years. Thanks, Mike

3N is a 3306 series and is listed as fitted to D5.

The d333t engine in our d6c has a cast aluminium valve cover, 4.5 x 4.5 engine. Our d5 98j has the d333c(3306) with a stamped steel valve cover. 4.75 x 4.75 engine.

Yes, the 3Nxxxx series is for the 3306. A 21J (Special Application) unit is fairly rare. On the 98J, it did not get the 3306 designation until s/n 98J1134-up.

The D333C has a rounded timing gear cover at the injector pump whereas the 3306 timing cover is squared off. I don't know if this is the case for all variations but has been on any motors I have seen.

Thanks for the info, going to try to go look it over sometime this week. How many 21J SA tractors were built?

One of my usual s/n sources doesn't list any production numbers and my other less reliable source says 619 units built in 1967 only???

Might be a 1967 only, I have seen 98J’s listed as 1968 I think. I think I have seen posted that there were about 2500 of them built 1968-1976. I am sure that most of them came to within about 150 miles of me originally. Still a fairly common tractor to see around here although most have been reduced to farm dozer status by now. I will get the serial number when I look at it again.
