Hi Eddy,
Thanks for the info as i am in the middle of putting my engine for 7U back together, and it is nice to know that i am doing the right thing by not using gasket goo, as i spent long time removing the old gaskets because some one used the goo.

Thanks

Daryl

Hi Team,
something to consider is that the info above is referring to gaskets that are still relatively new and so are still soft and pliable and not dried out and hard/in-compressible from sitting for 20 years in a hot store.
I can see that dried and likely hardened gaskets need to be re-hydrated with Diesel Fuel, oil, soluble oil mix, WD40 or such to get them pliable again before use so they can squash down and absorb any minor defects in the metal mating surfaces.
If the gaskets are hard they will not be compressible to do their job.

Any further comments or thoughts would be welcome.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Interesting, I put a smear of loctite 5900 on almost all gaskets, except exhaust and petrol (gasoline). Diesel mechanics at work do it as well. Been alright so far.

My late Uncle used to say put water-pump grease on gaskets........didn't think to ask why and he's not here now.......can anyone put this little mystery to bed, please?

Keep gasket from sticking and seal tiny pits in the flange surfaces?

Old Caterpillar mechanic I used to know always wiped a film of grease on gaskets before assembly. I’m sure it would make a difference on gaskets you might want to reuse like a pony motor base to clutch housing gasket.

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

Probably many better sealers but the old timers I was around used Gasgacinch brand. Go into any of the 3 or 4 independent parts houses in Paso Robles Ca,back in the day and ask for "Pretty Girl" and they would give you a can of Gasgacinch. You young ones may have to look up Gasgacinch and see the graphics on the can.

Today I still use Gasgacinch most of the time just because I always have. But if I think I might want to take it apart and reuse the gasket I put anti seize on one side. The same idea as the grease.
