looking for thoughts and experience with Backup Rippers....the good, the bad, the ugly....effective or not?
-i realize they are not a real replacement for an actual Ripper(rear mounted) but thinking farm/hobby dozer projects..etc..
-mostly working clay, hard pan around here, when digging a hole, pond etc..

Hi, kittylover123
They do work, at least to some extent, but .................... They can be hard on tracks as the load is being placed on the tracks in reverse to the designed direction.
Just my 0.02.
You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

I have one on my D4 and it works great. Sometimes getting through the shale around here can be tuff, and tilting the blade to extreme is hard on things too. I have brackets on both sides and in the middle, works good for road building as I rip as I back down for another pass. Handy for hard ground.

Back up rippers (4-tang) were standard spec. on military dozers.
-that's interesting that the military thought they were worthwhile...
-i understand what you mean Deas, dozers are designed to push...
-maybe as long as a person doesn't get hawg wild, they could be effective and not hard on the entire system..
-i like the fact that when backing up you can still be doing some work for the next pass, not just backing up:D

I have a 2U 8S blade on my 14A and it has ripper pockets but they were empty when I bought the blade at an auction. When I was back in Pennsylvania at Chum Duffy's Play Day, he had a military 14A sitting there with the heads off the engine but it had all four backup ripper shanks in their pockets. I told Chum how my blade had pockets but no shanks and low and behold, he said I could "borrow" two of them! A little less than a week later, they arrived by UPS at my doorstep in California and are now on the blade of my tractor. Thanks a lot Chumley!
I have not used them yet but have used a 13A and with a cable blade which had them and they came in handy. While going in reverse, the blade does build up dirt behind it and causes the rippers to ride up so that you are not getting a full cut, but in hard pan, they help a lot. If one has hydraulic tilt, I would say tipping the corner bit down would be quicker and more efficient than using backup rippers.

I welded a mount to take a tractor 3pl ripper on the front of my D4 blade works well as it has more traction and down pressure than my tractor.
Be aware that you will bend the shank if you do this.
