I know somebody told me once where to find a shop manual for our D4, but I can't remember where it was. Any thoughts? The brake on the left side went away.... it was working fine allowing for turns etc then it was gone,,, no brake pedal feel at all. still moves forward and reverse but no skip steer.....I've checked out the external brake linkage and it's ok so it seems like it's inside the case but I'm not sure how to get there. Any thoughts on that one? I figured w/ the manual I could at least find starting pt for research. thanks Doug

When have the clutch compartments been drained? It’s fairly common for the brake band to rust in two because of water accumulation in the compartment.
I think you have some access from the rear but the main opening is from the top, so seat off and then look for covers on each side. Or maybe it’s all under the one big transmission and bevel gear compartment cover. Just not familiar with the D4.

As ccjersy has said it is most likly that the band has rusted through or you could be lucky and it is only the nuts and bolts has rusted off. To get them out is fiddly but they come out in septarate parts.
Here is the parts for your model as it is a few hundred more then mine.

you guys are amazing... thank you for excellent info... never thought of the bands having rusted out but that makes sense. i kinda thought it might be the way to get at it through the top... are the covers on the bottom of the housings for inspection? I try to get some pics tomorrow but it's kinda muddy right now... thoughts on where one might get brake bands thank you both .. Doug

Manuals are a huge part of success for working on these machines. I look over mine even when not working on my D42t. There are several posts on this board-search “manuals” in the For Sale/Wanted. Big source is eBay. That’s where I’ve purchased most of mine. Key there is keep an eye out before you need them. You’ll find a good deal even in manuals not fir your tractor but hydraulics, fuel system, etc. manuals also help out the folks on here who are trying to help out with solving issues you may have.
I’ve not removed the brake bands through those inspection ports. I replaced my bands a few years ago When I worked on my steering clutches. I had the trans cover off and it was all accessible.

My later model 7U had the same symptoms happen last winter. I found the eye at the end of the band had broken open. I had thought to disassemble the band and repair it on the bench but opted to MIG weld it in place after I realized i was likely to break the 1/4" bolts that hold the sections together, and if that happened I would need to have the band bands completely rebuilt or replaced $$$. If you have the small access door on top like mine, you will be able to see from there if this has happened although it is apparently an uncommon failure. All the best!

It seems like I've read in the servicemen manual that there's no time savings on taking the brakes out in 3 sections versus removing the transmission cover. Having done the transmission cover on my 5t wouldn't try to fish them through the small opening. The fenders and tank come off as a unit and the top cover comes off pretty easy. Lots of room to work and not a big job

Dang! Well I guess my noob status is showing. I had thought the only way to remove the band was to disassemble into thirds and remove through the top main opening!
