Machining D2 Main clutch pressure plates

Pressure plates and fiber disc have built up rust and pitting. I have machined the engine side plate it looks pretty good now. I notice quite a bevel on the transmission side plate. center is hollowed, so outer edges would contact disk first. Does the over center mechanism put enough pressure on that plate to let the center contact the disc as well? Reason I went into the clutch was the collar seemed quite loose and clutch was slipping some times, enough that the engine would not load up much before not going anywhere, other times I could almost stall the engine. Tightening the clutch did not do much.

Pretty obvious the rust on the pressure plates and fiber disk are the issue. Also pushing the clutch lever all the way forward doesn't seem to engage the clutch brake. Hopefully that is just an adjustment I can take care of when I put things back together.

I am concerned about the bevel in the pressure plate, if the over center mechanism doesn't put enough pressure on that plate to fully contact the fiber disk at the center that could be another reason the clutch is slipping.

Any one know if that bevel is factory machined. or is my plate warped.

Another interesting thing is the throw out collar is stamped 3H4064, according to my manual it should be 3H4063. Any one have any thoughts?

Replied by edb on topic Clutch Plate Machining
Hi,
all components need to be flat to achieve maximum surface contact and longevity.
At The Dealer we used to surface grind the metal plates etc. so as to not leave any high spots at the heat affected areas that seem to appear on hard worked clutch components.
Cheers,

Thanks EDB

I doubt I can machine that bevel out entirely without compromising the integrity of the plate. A straight edge shows out by 1/16 to 1/8 inch. I wonder if I could heat it up under pressure and get rid of most of that concave. The other possibility, it is worn unevenly. The fiber disc still has the friction grooves in it near the center on that side. The rest of the disc they are worn down.

General gear gave me pricing (USD) on new parts.

$185 Flywheel plate 2F5828
$230 Clutch Plate 8F3401
$145 Disc 5F7434

Does that seem reasonable. Trying to get a pricing from Florin, but their website doesn't seem to be working. may have to call

The website has been down for ages. I’ve found an email for a price quote is preferred. But don’t quote me..
