Trying to get my new to me D2 pony running. It has no spark so I was checking the mag. Ended up pulling the mag. Found the drive gear with a tooth off. What’s the chance it was running like that? Could the broken tooth be somewhere it can’t hurt anything now? Seems like the cam gear is a little sloppy. The teeth on the cam gear show a little trauma but not bad. Guessing I will be pulling the motor off to have a look. What say you? If I’m pulling the pony is there some things I should be checking before it comes off? Thanks.

That Mag MIGHT work once with the tooth missing but I would chance it!
Is this an early J style or later U style? Makes a slight difference in Pony removal.

This magneto look like a WICO and with missing teeth on the gear you should check the flywell she must be shaking and by a bad front crankshaft bearing and check if the flywell is going up and dan and yes you better pulling the starting engine before more trouble.

shaft breakage was an initial problem and when that was addressed then tooth breakage become the result with loose flywheel--as Hector said-- and/or excessively worn pony main bearings, also excessive crankshaft end float could be an influence as well.

Thanks guys. I suspect the flywheel is loose. It looks like the nut has been messed with. I have zero history on this unit and the former owner is deceased. So I guess I will pull it after planters stop around here. Looks like it’s going to take more than I hoped to get it to fire. Oh well.
