Very interesting John, thanks for sharing it. The "good old days", not a hard hat, ear muffs or pair of gloves to be seen, and most blokes puffing on a cigarette!

Thanks John.

Brought back a lot of memories. I never worked on a cross country gasline but lots of the stuff they were doing in the film, I experienced during my career. One scene had the "foreman?" using a grinder without a shield or googles! Ouch! As Mike commented, lots of other transgressions to be seen!

Amazing project - wonder if still in use. Where do they find welders with a skill level to work in a 6 foot mud ditch overhead stick welding??? Bob

Yes that pipeline is still in use over 50 years on.

I worked on that pipe line all around the London area and home counties mainly hiring to Wm Press, the Cat 955H was used for stripping topsoil, every sort of digger to dig the trench, Priestman Cub, 10RB Poclain TCS, Oleomat HCi5 HyMac, it really was lovely work going through the country side and after we finished and reinstated it no trace of us been there, lots of work back then.
