I want to do some plowing with my 22 and a very old 3 bottom plow. I understand that break-away hitches are (or were) common to prevent equipment damage if you hit something that wont give. I have not seen anything like that type hitch for sale. Are they not considered needed anymore, or am I just not finding them? Are they available used? Any help is appreciated. Grant.

check to see if your plow has trip bottoms. if you hit something the bottom will trip and swing up and out of the way. probably need to make sure the trip mechanism isn't rusted stuck. could also have a shear pin. should make sure the shear pin isn't a grade 8 bolt.

This might be what you are looking for..... If you hit something solid the spring compresses and releases the arm.

Norm, yes that looks like what I saw in an old implement book. Bursitis, I will look to see if there is any type of trip mechanism. I had never heard of that either. This is a learning experience in old equipment. I will be looking for instructions on plow operation. There is no manufacture name on the plow but it is pretty beefy. Thanks for the info. Grant.

Always something to learn, never seen the spring mechanize to be put in between tractor and implement. But because of rocks and stumps heavy off set disc was the primary tillage tool by the time of my youth. Never even found the remains of a plow around here, bigger than a single bottom.
Good luck with your tilling. But
patience can make your luck much better.

most of the spring trip hitches are are part of the plow draw bar.If you use one of these use a light piece of wire to tie the trip rope to the tractor.Heavy rope tied to seat does not work good when hitch releases!

This old single furrow plow I picked up once had the trip right on the hitch pin. I never did trip it but now that you write about having a light piece of string for the rope, I'm glad I didn't : )
