Hey Everyone,
I have recently acquired a caterpillar 2-ton from the Schurman's Iron Ranch Collection Auction in Washington. When my father and I were bidding on it, it was just a frozen caterpillar we were going to use for parts on our 2-ton restoration. After getting it home taking off the engine hood, we discovered the valve cover says Hall-Scot on it. We are just trying to find out some more information about Hall-Scot 2-ton tractors. It is also missing it tag of course. That would have been to easy.
If anyone knows anything about the 2-ton sold to Alan Schurman, I would love to here from you.

Ian, did all Two Tons use Hall-Scott? Did they all have that valve cover with the name embossed on it?

Ian, did all Two Tons use Hall-Scott? Did they all have that valve cover with the name embossed on it?
My understanding is the first run of 2 Ton Holt tractors used engines made by Hall Scott, maybe the first 300 or so engines, before Caterpillar took over the manufacture of the engines.
I'm no expert on them but I can't recall seeing Hall Scott on the rocker cover and I believe Eddie is right that someone has just written with a felt pen on that one, I've seen HOLT on the early rocker covers.
My guess is that tractor was built between 1927 and 1928 and is a collection of spare parts someone had, the head is off a early engine but the rest of the tractor is later model looking at the seat, Dailey aircleaner and track frames.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the helpful information. I would tend to agree that the valve cover is not original as it is a common peace to broken. As for the belief it is written on with a felt pen, I assure you it is a cast print on the part. I have not found any other markings on the cat and it look like its radiator been replaced. I suppose the custom track covers could be cover up and text, but I will not know tell I have some first 2 ton done. I will update this post when I start to take it apart.

Wow that's cool on the embossing. Perhaps it was a replacement from a different application for this engine? Do we know where else this engine was used? Could you send a close-up photo of the lettering?

I don’t know where the 2 ton was used, I was hoping that someone on here may know where Alan Schurman got it.
Here are some photos of the lettering. (She is not really in a grate spot for photos right now.

Hi Team,
Hall Scott made a truck engine version of this engine it was made with aluminium castings, except for the cylinder block and cylinder head I believe. The truck version had a larger bore--I guess the bore size was reduced to reduce the Horse Power for the more severe tractor application.
Scan from my Dyke's Automobile and Gasoline Engine Encyclopedia, 16th Edition, 1932.
Way back I superimposed this over a 2 Ton Parts Book engine drawing and they coincided fairly well--main difference is the early H-S truck engines were Morse chain drive for the cam and such--later H-S truck engines went to gear dive as is the 2 Ton versions.

EDIT----have added a scan of a Hall Scott built Holt 2 Ton Engine and a six cylinder coach engine--this scan came from a Motor Coach Museum site many years ago and the site now does not seem to exist on-line. anymore
