I see from past threads you have a D24U tractor so I’m pretty sure you’re referring to the big spring in the track frame

Recoil springs in the track frames are potentially very dangerous when they come out of place and the tension is released.
If it’s all the way out, it is usually safer than hung half way, but even then, it should have a spring bolt through it from end to end holding it to a specified length. That spring bolt can be corroded so that it might break and release the spring without warning, so they’re never entirely safe. Best handled with caution if at all.

More information is needed to advise and pictures if possible.

When I had one come out of a D6, the front idler support hardware was shot and the track was very worn so the idler support blocks were sticking out a little past the end of the track frame. We got some used parts and broke the track to reinstall everything.

I have a 9U with a broken spring bolt right now, but the track is short enough to restrain the front idler well short of the front of the track frame, so it’s stable other than the track is too tight. Those 60-70 year old spring bolts should not be trusted too much.

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

I have had more problems with corroded nut threads--so when handling it i double nut the bolt--a picture of it would be helpful---it took 14 tons compressive load to compress the new spring
