This is "OLD AGONY" the aptly named 1953 Cat 212 grader that I turn wrenches on and operate for our local shooting range. 67 years young still going strong doing what she was made to do. There are approximately 3 miles of gravel roads that we maintain leading to and within the complex. Thanks to several members here she will have her brakes working again soon.

The name was painted on the back of the cab when our group acquired it a few years ago. I thought it was because of the arm-strong steering but it does kick a bit when you hit the end of travel for any of the levers. I found a used Behlen power steering unit and installed it two years ago. Now I can operate for four hours or so and when I get get out of it I'm not completely exhausted. I've had a couple of guys that said they would like to try operating but they only last a couple of hours and tell me they've had enough. I truly respect the men that operated these machines day after day for years, they were/are tough.

Looks good! How frequently do you grade the road?

They're too big. Instead of 1000 x 24's they're 1300 x 24's. The tires, used but usable, were donated we just had to pay the tire company $400.00 + to drive the 25 miles out of town and mount them. It seems 1000 x 24 grader tires are not available any more. If someone had asked me I would have looked for implement or truck tires of a more suitable size.

Lacking available water, a water truck and a roller/compactor I do them about one every four to six weeks from spring through fall and a couple of times during the winter if the weather permits. If a big event is scheduled, where we can get several hundred people with RV's coming, I try to get the roads dressed up for them. Being in a high desert, approximately 4000 feet and maybe 12" of moisture a year and a lot of traffic the washboards get pretty bad very quickly.

That grader would look so much better with an ACMOC decal set on it instead of those wrong generation decals.
