D4D 88A(78A) not charging

update:

I spent the afternoon on this job, basically have the cover off the voltage regulator and am actually activating the cut out and voltage contacts with a screw driver, there appears to be magnetism there on the cut out terminal, it will snap over and needs a gentle force to release it, or by tweaking the voltage terminal.

There really is no happy medium with it.....its either charging off the scale or not.

With the field terminal off I get about 2.5 > 4v coming up the Field wire from the dynamo.
With it all hooked up I have 25v on the BAT, ARM is always double what the FIELD but goes up and down - so 30v and 15v or thereabouts.

The ID plate on the dynamo is hardly visible but can make out something like 05241 03B

CCJersey pointed out that its entirely possible I have the voltage regulator for this machine

I checked the box and it shows 2M6495, the parts book shows 2M6497.......now does anyone happen to know if THAT is the reason I have the problem?

The 2M6495 regulator is 12v for the pony start.
The 2M6497 regulator is 24v for direct electric start.

so, before I press the button to order the unit for 24 volts, are we definitely saying that it makes a difference?.....logically i think it would but but electrics (and D2 carbs) are not my strongest points

Regulator is more specific to voltage output than the generator! I’ve heard of just swapping the regulator to go from 6 volts to 12. And I’ve seen a 24 volt generator producing in the 40’s volts when hooked up wrong (full fielded).

My only question is which generator do you actually have on it now. Is it the correct part number for the machine that will match the correct regulator when you get it?

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

My thought is that you should install the correct part number Richard, so if your machine should have 2M6497, then install it. Doesn't mean something else might be faulty but you'll at least have the right regulator.

Cheers,

CCJersey,

Well, the dynamo came from a machinery dealer who sells and breaks Cats, he said it was a recon'd from a D4D, i did ask if the new VR that came with it was the right one, he said it was.......only later thanks to ACMOC I learned what the difference was......so where to go next?......I did think about putting an alternator on it

Neil,

Right ho, I will get one, just wanted to be sure.....

thanks

Fellas,

Just want to close this thread and say that the charging issue has now been resolved.

It was indeed the regulator and to my cost I discovered that 12v regs don't work on 24v systems :-)

Thanks to OM for pointing this out to me

Every day's a learning day

thanks once again for all your contributions, everyone.
