D4 2T injection pump without oil?

More

I’ve taken my starting clutch and pinion assembly off and governor too to inspect, clean and service. And I’m repairing the pony engine as it had spun a rod bearing before I got it. While I do that I was going to drop the D4400 oil pan to clean and to clean oil pump screens. I was also going to check valve clearances before attempting a start after reassembly. Is it ok to turn the main engine over to do this while there’s no oil in the injection pump (because governor removed) or should I remove the injection pump too to prevent wear on the pump camshaft?

Turn it to do that
If you’re worried you could hold your hand over the end of it and fill it with oil temporarily to wet the camshaft but unless it had been dry for a long time it’ll still have a film of oil on it that will stand up to that little bit of friction.

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

doubt you will damage anything. if concerned use a little white lithium assembly grease on the cam lobes.

Do you know if or when the seal has been changed between the filter housing and inj. pump housing?

Thanks guys. No idea if that’s been done, there was plenty of oil in the injection pump housing when I drained it? Seems to have been maintained as there was no sludge in the fuel filter housing. Do you think it’s worth changing while I’m close? I don’t think from what I’ve read that the IP is timed so should be straightforward to remove. I’ve got new rockers, pushrods and lifters that were NOS. The rocker bushings look quite worn so was wondering whether to do those too.. so much choice!

If you have the governor off then I would replace the o-ring and maybe the lip seal too.

The parts don't cost very much. It come down to how lucky do you feel.

So get away running a with a leak for a long time, some not so long before engine failure.

Ok, that’s another plan then. Sounds like it should be done while I’m nearly there. More parts to add to the list! Thanks.
