D6 Flywheel Clutch Handle Shaft

On our 4R D6 (4R1143), I've replaced the bushing in the flywheel clutch enclosure (see attached pic from the Servicemen's Reference Book, bushing #14) . It is a press-fit bushing and the shaft for the clutch handle turns freely inside it. On the housing, there is a grease fitting outside the bushing. Neither the Service Manual nor this book call for drilling a hole into the bushing so the grease can actually lube the shaft. The old bushing I replaced did not have a hole.

Is there any reason why that wasn't drilled out? The old bushing and shaft are chewed up and it seems they would do better with more grease.

Looking at the parts book for an earlier s/n with that dog bone link it shows having three bushings. Could be the grease is fed between two bushings????

It's a single bushing in the clutch housing. There's a hardened bushing in the figure-8 lever that the clutch yoke pivots in inside the housing. And there is a third bronze bushing in that shaft support on the outside. I think I will go ahead and drill it even though the one I removed wasn't drilled. I can't figure out how anything would benefit from grease being injected between the housing and a pressed bushing.

On our d5 98j there were 2 bushings there.when they are pressed in flush to the handle there is a quarter inch gap in the middle for the grease to flow.

If not ,just drill the hole,no sweat

Replied by sheddcanyon on topic Field Changeover
OM, in my parts manual it's shown as a field changeover. The bushing I'm talking about is 4F7799, which presses into the clutch housing.

I'm replacing the bushing and shaft because I'm not getting any clutch brake, even though the pad and surfaces are all practically new. There is no clutch brake adjustment on this model. I think this field changeover was maybe designed to address this issue?

OK, I had to go to my early 9U parts book to get the field change over. Neither bushing shows accommodation for a grease fitting. Could be those bushings are oil impregnated bronze or some other type of non lube material. If not adding a grease fitting would be a good idea.
