Hi, Folks.
Not totally O. T. as there a couple of Cat machines included but there are film clips from various mines across Australia in the early 1960s, before the conversion to decimal currency on February 14, 1966 and before any of the big iron ore mines had started producing. There is not even any mention of Mount Goldsworthy in the Pilbara area of Western Australia which, I think, started production in 1963 or '64.

Enjoy.

A very interesting film Deas, thanks for sharing. The blue asbestos bit is scary, especially the guy holding it for the camera!

Hi, gauntjoh.
Yep. I think this film would have been taken maybe 2 or 3 years before they finally shut down that asbestos mine. Virtually the whole town of Wittenoom, now abandonded, was/is paved with asbestos mine tailings, including the school yard.
And I have been told that the mine owners knew of the problem for YEARS before the closure.
There was a white asbestos mine in the state of New South Wales which operated for years after Wittenoom was closed 'cos they 'thought' that it was only blue asbestos that was dangerous.

Interesting how they shipped the Copper Concentrate in bags. Maybe they said but I wonder how much of the mix was actually Gold?
