I am told I am a Essential worker but work has been slow due to the governors order to stay home and close everything. This left me with time on my hands and many Old Cat Iron projects. I decided I was in the mood to jump into 2 big Twenty's I have. 2 tractors with problems to make 1 nice machine.
The machine to be sacrificed is a narrow machine from California that I brought home, got running and discovered it had a bad final and the transmission case had been broke and welded, not prety but nice track frames.
The other is a wide machine with stuck engine, clutch and 1 staring clutch issue, it has excellent tracks but the brakes were froze up.
So I removed the engines from both of them, moved the good engine to the wide machine, I did remove and clean the clutch and grease the pilot bearing that was close to dry. I then removed the left side track frame and finals from both, getting the brakes freed up on the wide machine was a huge pain, I also removed the steering clutch to inspect, and in this case replace the thrust bearing with a better used I had. I reassembled using the track frame from the California tractor. In the process I decided to install a PTO I had for it along with a better draw bar and hitch plate. The levers for the steering clutches were sloppy, the pictures will tell that story. The next step is to get it turned around in the shop to do the right side. This has been a LOT of work but has kept my occupied.

Steve A,
Maybe you were there but I really enjoyed seeing your fellow citizens up there blocking the streets yesterday and calling the Governor out! She had it coming. We may have to do the same thing and take a trip up to Sacramento.
Your project is looking good. I have mine all back together but now I get worn out trying the crank the darn thing. I tried hard one day a few months back and will need to try again soon. It was running when I took it apart...……...Kind of like it was running when it was parked!
Will you be doing one of your bang-up paint jobs on the finished tractor? I remember being very impressed at Brownsville with your paint jobs.

Today's progress--slow
I got the machine moved and removed the right side track, frame and final, The sprocket has a broken spoke and needs to come off but is was not going to move. So off with the cover and sprocket, I have lots of parts. The pin the brake pivots on is proving to be difficult on this side also. This is where I quit for today
Jan , you must be referring to the small 15 that I painted the wrong color yellow. I did paint it however I dont like to paint. TY.

Steve I spent a chunk of time on those brake anchor pins on my 5U - ended up drilling them out and they're about 10 inches long. Plain pin in a plain hole in the housing with no sealing and no way to lubricate - another outstanding piece of design : ) Now copper-lubed up the wazoo so the next guy will have an easier time of it.
Cheers,

The brake pivot pin was very stubborn, I drilled about 1/2 way through then hit a hard spot, Taped it for 5/8 NC and put the puller to work, I still added some heat as I was concerned I was going to pull the threaded rod out of the pin. In the end I won. Upon further inspection I discovered the pinion bearings were in sad shape so why not go through the whole final drive.

I'm with you - when I open it up, I replace every bearing, seal, and gasket because the cost of those items pales in comparison to the time required to go back in again later. That said, now that I know what's in there, if I did have to go back in, I wouldn't change them unless they were worn or damaged.
Cheers,
