D7 17A steering clutch adjustment

My left track is slipping under a heavy load after my D7 17A has worked for awhile----I have adjusted the clutch play to the recommended 3 inches play at the top of the rod and it still slips. Do I need to have more than 3 inches on the rod?
Thanks for any help. Otis

No
Mores not better than enough
The 3” is so there’s enough for the clutches to wear without running out of free travel.

Are you sure there isn’t oil accumulated in the compartment that’s made them slip? That’s about the only thing other than too much wear and/or lack of adjustment that would do it.

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

Thanks for your reply. I don't see any oil in the compartment or on any of the pieces I can see through the rear opening.

Did you adjusted the stering cluch from the rear cover under the brake booster by loosen the lock nut and adjusting the big nut and the free play should be on top handle stering cluch lever
