Hi BB,

Been a long time since I've been here, hope all are doing well and practicing social distancing. Got a question about a D4 7U pony magneto. Got one I'm trying to remove from the block and it won't come loose. Removed the two nuts on the flange and tapped on front of mag with plastic tip hammer and and it still wont break loose. Sprayed Kroil around the flange perimeter and tapped on it, now letting it set a while.

I'm thinking the aluminum shoulder that fits up in the hole of the block has corroded, as the engine has been off of the diesel for a while and was in storage.

Open to any suggestions about removing it. Sometimes something like that makes you want to ask more questions, before it becomes a calamity.

Thanks

Yes, most likely corroded as you say. Soaking and maybe some heat from a hot air gun along with patience.

Heat applied to the cast iron around it should help.

Keep an eye on the weather tonight neighbor! Might need a pony motor in your back pocket for ballast if it gets really bad!

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

Do you see black flow anywhere on the base? Coil may have broke down and melted some. Pull front cap to see it. Could have seeped onto mounting area at base on block and firmed up again.

Got it removed intact! Put a cutoff piece of thin pallet board underneath the exhaust manifold and slid it up against the front of the mag, then tapped on other end of board with hammer. The aluminum flange had not corroded as thought, but the inner circumference of the hole in the block had rust on it, it was binding the shoulder on the flange. That Kroil sure helped, though. Thanks for the replies! The more tricks I can learn on something like that, the better.
