HI! Bruce's work on his Holt 45HP combine engine made me think about starting to work on mine again. I bought mine at the Heidrick auction several years ago. I and my family visited Bruce during the summer of 2018 and picked up a few of the parts I was missing. My plan had been to work on the engine during the summer of 2019. The problem being I have had a John Deere 60 torn apart in the shop for several year and needed to get it out of the way before I could drag the Holt up from again. Now the JD 60 is getting close to being back together I can start to think about the Holt engine again for this summer. I picked this mag up from Buzz Stetler at the open house ACMOC held for the opening of the Heidrick museum in Woodland California. Airport security was having a fun time figuring out what I had in my carry on bag on the trip home. When I got home I did quite a bit of work on it including clean up, paint and made several new parts for it. I reassembled it but never finished it up as I was not ready to replace the coil on it yet. I also picked up a couple of more mags for parts. After that it has sat on a shelf in my office. Three different mags were used on the Holt 45 and 55 HP combine engines. The Splitdorf model B and Model W and the KW model HK. The Splitdorf models B and W use an external coil with a battery for starting. The KW model HK is self contained. I have a Splitdorf model B and coil I will put on if I can find the correct mounting bracket. In the mean time I need to finish up the HK. The first two pictures are of the mag before it was torn apart again. They could be ending pictures as I did not refinish the mag again. The third picture is of the disassembled mag. The forth picture is of the new coil and a better shaft and rotors out of one of the parts mags. Pictures 5 and 6 are of setting the end play on the main shaft. I thought I had more pictures of reassembly but I can not find them. It is back on the shelf waiting for me to need it for my engine. Next up, when I have time to finish it is the vacuum tank. It you have Holt parts I am looking for the head outlet water manifold for the 45HP and the brass oiler for the crankcase. I have the bottom of the crankcase oiler shown in the last picture. I would be happy to just get the head and I can make the missing tubes and nuts.

Looks great Ken! Magnetos are such a great example of old school technology that still delivers.

Cheers,

Looks great Ken! Those KW mags are some of the classiest magnetos there are. I cranked my 45 up the other day, second cylinder up and it was running.

That’s a pretty engine Pete. I finally found a Holt radiator for mine. I need to go through it yet.
