Dayton Fayette trailer brake drum 122369-a 12 1/4" 1980

Is this brake drum cast steel or cast iron? I want to use it as a 'reducer' for a mail box 'post' and weld it to a large earthmover wheel.

Thanks, Daron

Do the grinder spark test to check if cast steel or iron.

Weld a bolt on the inside where it wont be in the way and hit it with a hammer. if it stays it's steel.

Take your portable grinder to the metal in question and identify the spark pattern. There are u-tube videos on the net that show the process in color.

OM-

Last evening, after the sun wasn't interfering so much, (and i retrieved a document saved years ago explaining spark tests) I got very small short stream sparks vs much longer sparks from known steel samples. Oh well, back to the scrap pile to try to find something to do what I'm trying to do.

Thanks, Daron
