D2 5U Water Pump rebuild

This brings me to a question I have. As I said, all of the replacement seals I’ve ever seen before this last year have been a unit. The seal carbon ring and rubber bellows have been glued into the brass cup. Last year I ordered a few from an aftermarket supplier and the “guts” is loose in the brass cup with just an o-ring on the base to seal it. I’m guessing this is the way they are supposed to be? Seems a bit shaky to me compared to having it cemented in but what say you? I’ve got a couple on hand.

The new aftermarket ones I've seen have a slightly different face on the ceramic washer, the ID and OD of the sealing face are different giving less sealing surface.
Would love to see a picture of the new aftermarket ones you have to compare against the one in picture that d4angelo posted.

I am in the process of rebuilding the water pump on my D2 5U. This is how I found the bellows seal cage when I took it apart. Does this look correct, or do the "lobes" need to be seated on the larger slots?

Here is new cat seal. 30 years old but unused
Part number 4F4769E
Part number stamped into brass cup is 4F4769M

Clear to see D4Angelos seal has shifted (rotated) and jammed in place eliminating the spring pressure alighnment function. Wonder if it can be freed up to work again?

Correct Juiceman, I have replaced the radiator core with a brand new one. It was custom made at a shop in Oregon called Radiator Supply House. The dimensions are exact, and the fit was perfect. I opted to retain my existing oil cooler. I had the option to eliminate it and have the core extend all the way across.
So you may ask??? Why rebuild the water pump? Because I ruined the seal by putting the fan back on the key way by POUNDING it on. My mistake and a humbling experience. I will use a press next time.
