Clarification again, there all AG tractors but it is the later SA (Special Application) D4D & E units that had beefed up drive trains. Even those could be tore up by abuse.

i watched a youtube vid of a d4c pulling eight bottoms of plow. i could see it wasn't turbo charged and wasn't smoking either. could a standard d4c pull eight bottoms?

Bursitis; in good loam soil it would, ours pulls 6 bottoms in rock hard adobe in 3rd gear, sometimes especially hard spot, have to go to 2nd. It is stone stock 65hp, 1965 model. Tom.

Thank You Tom. i would like to know more about farming with the caterpillar tractors. 65 hp pulling eight bottoms or even six as you describe is amazing. do you know about what plow, disc or seeding equipment the D4 u series would pull?

I always liked this photo of a 180 hp D7E pulling 15 bottoms. 180hp pulling 15 bottoms! It would take a 400 hp wheel tractor to do that!

Dry farming in the hard adobe, a u series our neighbor had pulled an 8 foot john deere stubble disc, or a 4 bottom mold board plow. Softer soil, loam should pull a 10 ft disc and 5 bottom pretty well. A disc plow will pull easire that a moldboard, but they are hard to find. With spring planting, should be able to scratch surface with a chisle plow or other cultivator, depending what needs to be turned under that is currently growing. Good luck. Have fun, this is not work, it is play!
