without going into the chemistry the American petroleum institute--API---has denoted oils suitable for gasoline as having the S suffix, and oils suitable for diesel as having the C suffix---many diesel oils nowadays have a dual certification and is ok for diesel and gas

My simple understanding is there is a lot more detergent in diesel oils, I'm sure there are other important differences, but you can happily use diesel oil of the correct viscocity in gas engines but not the other way round.
