Juiceman - trailer non-slip mat

JM, I seem to recall you mentioned once some material that could be laid on steel decks and ramps to reduce slipping steel-on-steel. Some kind of white material like a carpet? Do you think it's worth it vs. say a cheap strip of old carpet?

Hi Neil: I have remnants of food grade conveyor belting. About 28” wide and maybe 5/16” thickness? Got all of mine when the former Harter Packing company when slammed its doors shut here. Make room for your carry on, and I’ll send a roll of it home with you.
Hope you all still make it out here to the left coast. This pandemic has gotten out of control. Sickness and lost lives, also cut the tractor and truck shows short.
We might have to go CAT shopping when you arrive.

We have used old conveyor belting between steel deck and tracks. Places like Fed Ex and UPS throw it out after a while and replace a whole line. It is cheaper than having a line go down. Rock quarries use a heavier belting but I suppose it would depend on how big a machine you are trying to load.

American have cancelled our flights JM and I'm trying to figure out when the next sensible time to come out (taking into account my kid and her friends spring breaks etc. overlapping now that they've been moved - San Jose school district is apparently in May now) so I don't really know what our plans are at this stage.
But conveyor belting eh? Do you think regular quarry belting would be as good? I'm thinking of the trailer ramps - once it's on the wooden deck, it's golden.

Cheers,
Neil

Back when I was gainfully employed, we had 100's of feet of 30 in and wider conveyor belt 1/2 in thick. All stuff we replaced on our belt lines. We would roll it up in 25 to 50 ft pieces. Tell just a couple of guys that came in the yard, word of mouth it would all disappear in a couple weeks. Saved us $$$ in disposal. I have a piece in my pickup works well no slide.

Dad use to bring 24 inch(?) Conveyor Belting home from the Tile Plant, we cut it 8 inches wide to make Flat Belts! Sometimes they ran a little crooked because of the Stretch(sag) in the middle! Used it for Trailer and Shop Floor non-slip also!

Ok sounds good fellas. Norm, it's only for the D2 so light-weight. How's the Bones East practice going - doing it by conference call? : )

Neil,

Bones East rehearsals Sat. cancelled, Wind Ensemble, Sunday cancelled, Orchestral, Monday, cancelled, LaFayette Band, Tuesday, cancelled, Big Band, Wed. cancelled, Lyncourt Band Thurs. cancelled. All concerts, cancelled. I'm beginning to see a trend here. The rule of thumb has been to wait till April 15 before getting anything out of winter storage, so I'm a bit hesitant to do any of that. I did get the locker cleaned out at the ski area, between the weather and the plague, that is done for the year. Only got in 225 runs this year, 289 last year. I have two Cats to move as soon as the ground hardens up. There is enough stuff to do but weather, the close downs and lack of help, precludes doing much of it. I'll check with Scott in Canandaigua to see if he still has the old belt from the conveyor we were using on the rock crusher. I'll let you know what I find out.

Norm--what ski areas do you go to? I wasn't aware of any major mountains in that area? I used to have a ski house at Windham area and now have one at JIminy Peak

225? Wow, pays to be retired : ) I got in precisely twelve, and they were with my son so I didn't get to let 'er rip. Oh well, there's always next season I suppose. I was thinking of picking up the D2 to bring it home to work on but the trailer's not registered and the ground's too wet so it'll have to wait. I have a full set of new D3 rollers to fit and will follow the process that the guy that posted on General Gear's website used - basically add a 1" strip to the underside of the track frame to account for the smaller roller diameter. I have the new rails, so that leaves the idlers, and one sprocket that needs a new spline section. The pinion is working well now - might need one or two more fine tunings to get it perfect for both warm and cold weather and then I no longer need to think about it. Well, not strictly true. The pinion housing moves a little in the bell-housing, so I'm thinking of wrapping some shim material around it for a tight fit, or lay down a bead and turn it down to 002 or 3 (per my scientific eyeball estimation).

Forgot to add for Dan - we have three decent ones: Bristol which is the larger one close to Rochester but tends to be packed and is as expensive as get out, Ellicott Valley closer to Buffalo which is nicely resort-y like Mont Tremblant in Quebec, and the one we go to which is Hunt Hollow, a private field - smaller but perfect for kids, and it has some decent steep and icy challenging stuff - 45mins from my house. I know Norm has Greek Peak south of Syracuse (never been there) but not familiar with anything else within an hour of there. And they're not major mountains : ) - 1200' if you're lucky but us elderly gentlemen don't mind the smaller hills.....

Cheers,
Neil
