After years of using #2 Permatex on both sides of the head gasket I would now recommend using the "Super 300"
www.permatex.com/documents/tds/Automotive/80057.pdf

I also suspect that there has been some reformulation to the original #2 as we are finding it does not stay as pliable as the old stuff.

Why not use Indian Head gasket sealer. When I was a lot younger and worked on farms, that was the sealer of choice to seal head gaskets on tractors. I know you can still get it at NAPA stores.

The Indian Head or #3 Permatex are good gasket cements but they tend to glue the parts together to where you have to "dynamite" to get them apart. The preferred sealer will provide an effective seal, allow expansion and contraction and release with reasonable force when it comes time to get it apart. All in good theory anyway;) ;)
