I think the gasket on the cover to adjust the pinion wasn’t all there letting moisture get in and that’s what caused the pinion to rust up the main clutch is free after some adjustment and the fingers don’t arnt rusted at all. Everything still had oil in it while I was taking it apart. Do you guys know of a better place than trying to get all the gaskets from cat for everything I have apart of is cat the best bet to get all of them?

Its usually best to get them and parts from Cat, most of the time they have the best price and you don't have to pay allot extra for shipping.

Just for the benefit of the others, I want to clarify that the governor cover does not need to be removed if the latch mecanism is on engaged position. Mine was stuck as well, but I was able to help the springs by prying the two latches and by using penetrating oil (wd40).

Ducatti, that's not always the case, even if the pinion is latched. Some do, others don't. My 5U13753 does require it, but luckily removing the governor cover is not a big deal if a person finds it just won't come out. I'm not sure where the difference lies - if I had two side by side, I could measure various parts to se what the governing factor is. I think the 3Js don't require it but it also seems some U-series do and others don't. My 5U is post 13273 when the two-piece clutch shaft came in and perhaps there was a change them.

Yes very correct Neil, my 3J 1920 D2 I was able to pull the pony and pinion out on the weekend to refit the end sleeve for the pinion shaft, slightly worn on the end as per picture, a little build up on the end to allow the lever to contact and manage to push the sleeve forwards to latch once again to spin the flywheel (small gap of 1/2 inch), a tight squeeze to remove and refit it to the housing. While I had it out in checked over the pony and cleaned all the sludge out of pinion area and new oils in, the brake is good and the clutch adjusted up ready to go next week when I get home, fuel up and pony should be running and driving the diesel. This thread has helped out a lot for the info discussed to get it sorted out, Thank you to all !!!!
