I got a starter drive and housing from triodiode. He said the housing may not be right because he never had to get one for a d4. Well I received it today and the bolt holes don’t line up. He said to let him know if it was wrong so in the mean time until he’s open on Monday I want to try and find a # for the right one. The one he sent is 371-12007. The drive he sent me seems like it is right but I may as well make sure. The # is 220-12197r. Thanks

When I tried to put the MT 40 on my D4 7U, I took the end piece off and tried it in the starter hole first. Some grinding was required on it to clear the ring gear on the main clutch. Then after marking it, it was a case of trial and error to get the starter rotated in the end piece so's the solenoid would clear the pony motor clutch housing and yet clear the sheet metal side panel when it went back on. A chunk of rope over the hood and tied to the track on the other side and wrapped around the starter to support it made life a lot easier when it was time to install it. .that critter is HEAVY!!

Wups, just remembered. .I also had to take the die grinder and reach inside the clutch housing to grind some off one of the cast in lugs the fender bolted to inside the housing.

Which starter are you using?
Which holes don't line up....mounting or indexing?
If you get the correct 145 degree indexed nose...no grinding is required.
The 12197 drive is correct.

PS:
There doesn't seem to be any consistency to the after market drive end housing numbers so you would have to supply an accurate description of what you need. eg. SAE #3 mount, 145 degree nose indexing, number and arrangement of indexing holes. 5/8 flange bolting and whether it is for the 40MT or 42MT starter.

Its going to be a 40mt. I don’t have a starter yet. The guy that is going to put a rebuilt starter together for me told me to find the gear and housing first then he will put it together. When I tried the housing in the hole I cut the mounting bolts were no were near lined up. If I had to grind that much to make it fit there would not be much left. So if I tell Triodiode sae #3 145 degree housing he should be able to find the right one? On OM Image shack the number is 51-168 should I just tell him that? Thanks

That's the right info......but as I said there doesn't seem to be any standard numbers between aftermarket suppliers. You may have to go to CPC to get the right one. Give Triodiode a test:)
