D2 Hydraulic fluid and capacity

I have a front mounted CAT hydraulic unit on my D2. The unit is all in one, tank, pump, and valve. Going to change out the fluid after reinstall of engine. Does anyone know the fluid capacity, and is it OK to use John Deere Hy-Guard fluid in it so I can stay common with everything else I have? Thanks Tim

Replied by SJ on topic Hyd. Oil
It would be hard to guess esp. if you lost some oil from the jacks and lines when you had it apart.A 933 loader with the same engine as the D2 calls for 24 gal. but then again you have 4 jack instead of two like the dozer and that would be complete capacity from no oil in the whole system to the full capacity. I can,t see why the JD oil wouldn,t be ok so if you use it in your other machines start out with maybe a couple 5 gal. cans or three and see how far it goes.

The #44 unit itself holds 3.5 gallons. Probably will need around 5 gallons total from an empty system, once you run it and purge all the air and refill.

If the oil is really dirty, there is a way to lift the tractor up with the dozer blade on tall enough blocking that it will just get on top of it when you raise the blade all the way. Then you raise the tractor up on the block, shut it down, drain the oil and then move the lever to let the blade rise up (tractor goes down to ground) to purge the oil from the cylinder.

Secure blocking is a must here!

Might be easier to lift the dozer with another machine.

System is already empty. I'm just finishing a complete engine rebuild, and drained, lost a bunch as well when I took apart. Thanks for the replys Tim

I use aw46 from sam's club in all my machines--5 gal for $27 and it seems to work well from 80 degrees to minus 10 dgrees F.
