MikeMc and I hauled another load of tractors up to Woodland this weekend, using his tractor this time.

Mike's truck ran great. We only broke a few pieces off my trailer, so it was a better than average trip.

We spent Saturday and half of Sunday helping Tom, Willie, Jess and the rest of the crew move tractors around.

We had a really great time. There is getting to be a pretty good group of tractors over at the show area now.

I'll attach a few pictures so you can see what we were up to.

Thanks for running with me all weekend, Mike and to Willie, Jess and the gang for letting us participate.

My camera seems to have taken somewhat dark pictures. I don't have any editing software, but maybe someone can lighten these up a bit.

I'm not sure what the plan is for the pipes, but I suspect it has something to do with the play area. I wanted to make sure that everyone could see that even though we are just weekend workers, we are very safety concious, following each rule and regulations. Note the flashing lights, pilot cars and flags on this load.

A couple of questions for you in Calif. with the older diesel trucks. Is there going to be an exemption for older trucks form the C.A.R.B. rules that will be out in the next year or so that says that you have to have a new diesel engine in your trucks(tier 3 or 4, I think?). I think that I heard that the first refit was by 2010 and all engine would have to be changed again by 2014. It was also my understanding form the meeting that I was at that you could not sell your old engines for anything but scrap.

I am not an expert in this, but we do have a fleet of about twenty trucks and have been following the regulations pretty closely.

As I understand it, the rules are pretty much as you describe them. The talk now is that trucks used in commerce will have to be retro fit with tier 3 or tier 4 compliant engines. This is at least the third time, possibly the fourth, that this rule making discussion has come around.

It always seems that when it gets down to brass tacks, is time for the rule to actually get enacted, and they realize the economic impact, they always back off to just tightening rule on new manufactured trucks and engines, but don't require that existing engines be taken out of service. I expect this go-round to evolve in a similar fashion. Hopefully after all the dust and noise has settled, the worst that will happen is that any replacement will have to be with tier 3 or 4 compliant engines, but no mandatory removal from service.

Our trucks are all licensed as historical vehicles, can't be used for commerce (charge money for services), and are exempt from any air regulations. I don't have to pay excise tax, my registration is $58.00 per year, I don't have to comply with the air, noise and other regulations. Technically, I don't even have to be inspected or pull into the scales, but I do comply with both of those. What the law says you have to do, and what the D. O. T. guy looking you in the eye think are often two different things.

The same applys for construcion equipment, at least for the time being. Many people have worried that our California air board is going to require that our collector tractors be cut up for scrap or disabled because of their emissions. As far as I can tell, from discussions with the state and local regulators and from hearings that I have attended, there is no intent to cause that to happen. Everyone I have spoken to has assured me that there will always be a provision for historical examples and preservation of operable examples of early equipment.

I live in Bakersfield and Willie has some more loads to be hauled up there from the Tulare area but I don't own a trailer. If any one is interested in letting me use a trailer to haul some Cats, please let me know ASAP so I can get it on my insurance and get the loads lined out.

If I can't locate a trailer I'm going to run up there bob tail and use one of their trailers to move local loads to the show. But it would be helpful to haul Cat's up there since I'm already headed that way.

Nice photos. Thanks for sharing.

If you have Microsoft Office Picture Viewer, it has facilities for picture correction, including brightness, contrast, redeye, sizing, etc.. Open your photo in MOPV and left-click 'Picture' and it will give you a drop-down menu of things you can with the photo. Select one of these tools and a window will appear on the right of your screen with all the options and buttons for that function.

DP, I have XP pro and can not find the picture viewer you speak of. Am I over looking it.... or do I have to buy it?

You still headed this way for the show? You touching down in LA? I have a open seat in my truck if you want to ride up there with me then get a rental car. I'm going to try and head up the weekend before with Pete to help haul some more Cat's.
