Here's some more pics from my & jbird's project. We fired engine a few weeks ago, ran a little rough, then an old timer from work (last one not retired!) suggested setting injection timing on pumps. Engine then smoothed out & runs great:D :D We ran 5-6 gallons of fuel through her and loved every second. I feel like king of ob. said, could sleep like a baby beside her.
(My wife might enjoy as much!) It only has about 25-30psi oil pressure hot, but holds same at idle. Can we shim relief through pan access plate? Or should leave alone, oil drizzles off rocker shafts. Now more motivated we sand blasted& painted frame, installed crosshaft & ring gear, trans, and re-sprung, & relined steering clutches. Have located a b or c model tractor with good undercarrage & blade, could not find serial #. Would tracks, roller frames & equlizer bar fit 9u? how about blade? :confused: :confused: sure looks close. tracks measure same. They all look a lot better than our stuf:) Could frames be modified to fit?? We can only spend a few nights & weekends a month on this project, but are now motivated to stay after it. This one may make it to a ACMOC show :) :) Will send more pics as it goes!!

Leave the oil pressure alone, that's right where it should be (even new) for these units.
The D6B undercarriage fits the "U" series and should have the hydraulic track adjusters as well as improved recoil spring retention. The "B" will also have the improved "duo-cone" seals in the finals and may only need new seal rings to make right again.
That Hyster D6C winch will also bolt up.

Might be a little late but did you change out the ball sockets for the clutch yokes? The ones that reside down in the bottom corner of the case. They often get overlooked and tend to rattle and raise hell with the steering clutch adjustment.

Mounting the "B" blade could get messy as they had a different hydraulic system then the "U" models used. The blade itself could be adapted to go with a #46 hydraulic system used with the "U" models and hardnose.

Do a close inspection of your frame rails where they transition to the case. Hard to believe but they are prone to cracking there. See the weld repair in the pictures of your parts tractor.

I believe you can also take the carrier stand off the "B" and put on the 9U. Ido know that it will raise if up-took them off D5 and did that.

Wasn't sure about oil pressure but feel better now.:)

Ball sockets were not badly worn and yoke ends had been replaced at some time. Should have looked closer though.

Frame was cracked where OM said, as well as top & bottom of case. Have good friend who is great wielder help repair. Some bolt holes on top of case were cracked through & had to be wielded & re-drilled, including brake return spring brackets. These were not re-drilled' thougt we'd make bolt on brackets.

Not sure if we can get b tractor (owner out of town) but his mechinic is sure he will sell. Depends on price. We already spent more than expected (imagine that!!). Will have to buy one rail and several rollers if we dont get it, as well as a lot of wielding work. Our blade is repairable but will also take lots of work..

Next thing is final drives, my wielder buddy has already installed new sprocket rings so guess we will go with them. One side looks to have new bearings & seals, other seems good except for one spot on inner bull gear bearing. Have new bearing & race & 2 bellows seals, thougt we'd put new seals on inside & reuse good seals on outside. sprockets press on 30 tons?? Thay will probably set too far on splines, but dont know what to do about it:confused:
Tank\seat mounts, brake pedels, steer levers soon to come, also will check & clean tank and replace worn steer pin & bearings.

OMs advice as well as this sites information has been a great tool and is GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!:D :D :D Will send more pics including frame repairs.

Nice thing about the D6 case is that it is all steel fabrication so weld repairs are not a problem.
Seems like that unit has seen hard service.....a lot of them did.
There is a trade-off between hard bar and spring. The spring winds up doing a lot of flexing on a dozer but the hard bar increases the leverage on the frame.

Updated specs (1958) call for 35-40 ton press fit on the sprocket/hub.
Projection from splines to face of sprocket should be 0.06 - 0.19 in under the 35-40 ton press. Can be a little off but to much effects the bellows seals. There is no fix except replace with better fitting parts. Seems sprocket were inclined to get loose under the old 30 ton spec.
