Yes Deas I believe it was Peterson that did the repowering of the D8s.I have rebuilt many of them old engines as here in my area with the coal strippings years ago there were lots of drag lines with the D17000s in them. Also a railroad Co. here had some 17000s in their switcher engines that I rebuilt several of them years ago. They had two engines in each switcher engine & powered generators. There was other D17000 engines around here that was used for other power but never did see one in the old D8s.They were a little different from normal the way they were engineered.

Heidrick Farms in Woodland, California converted farm Cats with truck engines. I have one with D5B, D6 9U, 977, D7E and D7F parts and repowered with a 1673 Cat truck engine. They had 10 of these tractors built up using a 977 and beefing up the rear ends.

I bought the last one they converted. It had longer track frames then the first nine using D5B undercarriage on 977 extended frames.

I farm with it a little but I didn't think it had all the all the horses awake yet. A truck engine like the 1673 sounds good when you can keep your foot in it.

Dave the 1673 truck engine is just the basic D333 engine that was used in the 977 53A & the D6 44A after the 9U & in a few other applications. It was aftercooled in the truck & a few other changes to make it compatable as a truck engine. The same went for the 1693 truck engine as it was the basic D343 duel overhead cam engine used in the 983 & 988 loaders & scrapers & other applications.

I forgot to add that the 1673 engines depending on the SNs & settings put out from 220HP to a high of 250HP at 2200 RPMs under full load.

I knew of a RD-4 with an IH 345 or 392 v-8 with a truck 4 speed transmission bolted between it and the original input shaft. It sold at the I&I tractor club spring sale in Penfield,IL last spring or the year before. Things seem to run together anymore. The undercarriage was pretty thin and the engine was stuck as well as having on of the exhaust manifolds knocked off of it. The salvage yard up at Loda bought it and it was still there for a while. Don't know if it was scrapped or if someone saved it.
