24V generator to 1 wire alternator

Took the generator in for bearings and brushes as it was noisy, it has been together so long the screws were breaking off on the covers and brush holders so changed to an alternator. Pretty easy and tidy change, used the same pulley, cut the rear portion of the bottom mount down 4", drilled and rethreaded for the rear bolt, made a new spacer for the adjustment bracket and it fit perfectly, pulley lines up exactly. Also eliminated the voltage regulator. $200 bucks, I thought it was worth mentioning.

Very clean installation. Where did you buy the alternator?

The guy that was working on the generator got it so I'm not sure where it came from but I can find out if you need one or see if I can find a tag on it. No wiring either, took the regulator out and connected the armature wire to the battery wire that were at the regulator.

Nice installation.

Just as a tidbit of information for those that have the Motorola 24 volt alternators with the attached replaceable voltage regulators. You can get a regulator from Motorola that converts these to a one wire system. It makes it very easy to correct bad wire or to simplify rewiring one. These heavy duty alternators were very common on sixties era machines up to at least 1974. (My 74 International had the same one)

DPete, I misunderstood your post. I thought you gave $200 for the single wire alternator. I bought one from Florin but paid more for it.

Could you explain the wiring of your new alternator? I have an almost identical set-up. How did you eliminate the volt reg?. Did you send that yellow wire straight to the Battery?
Thx
Joe

With the internal regulator “one wire” alternators, when replacing a generator, unless you want to replace the old wiring, you can typically use the armature (sometimes labeled GEN) wire that ran from generator to regulator.

Connect it to the alternator output stud and then at the old regulator, connect that end to the BAT wire, either by splicing it or I usually leave the old regulator in place and simply put both wires under the BAT screw. The rest of the wiring can stay the same if there’s no problem with it. Using the existing wiring should keep the ammeter in the circuit so you have the usual indication of battery charging rate. Some conversions do away with the ammeter in favor of a volt meter which is fine, but it does not make the connection between the alternator and the battery like the ammeter does. In any event you should make sure the battery(s) actually get the voltage being created by the alternator. Old ammeters might be open and no current can get through to or from battery.

The old regulator can stay in place without causing any problems unless you just want to get rid of it.
