It's amazing how many old Cats are being used on a regular basis here in Hawaii. The locals don't think twice about it. When you point this out to them they don't seem to understand why there's anything unique about it. With so many old Cats here it's pretty amazing. It's just a way of life. The locals are very resourceful and fix or repair everything.

Anyway, this may sound like a dumb question but, where exactly does the lube oil go in the pony clutch on my D-2(3-J) 1941. Does it actually go into where the clutch spins, or in the 5/16th plug hole under the pony cylinder? or in some other location I haven't located. My pinion is starting to feel a little sticky, or dry. I adjusted the clutch, now the pinion feels as described. Is there a drain plug too?

Yes oil goes in the clutch and there is a level plug there in the front cover to remove and take the top side little cover off or slide to the side and fill with oil till it comes out of the plug hole in the front cover there.You use CO (crankcase oil) in it same as you use in the starting engine itself. Some earlier tractors had a fill plug on top of the housing but don,t know if yours does or just the little cover held on by two bolts but either way that,s where you fill it to the little hole of the level plug removed down in the front cover of the clutch housing.

My little 3-J has a plug on the top of the housing. I'll go fill her now and check it out.

John remember as I told you, you don,t fill the housing clear to the top plug hole but that,s just where it goes in and the level plug is down in front on the little front cover of the clutch housing so with that plug out just put enough oil in at the top plug till it comes out the bottom plug hole and put the plugs back in and you should be ready to go.

I took the lever off and inspected things. I see what your refering too. I see a casting in the bottom of the housing where the oil sits. It doesn't look like it requires much. It appears that it's just enough for the clutch to grab onto the oil a slight amount as it spins.

What lubricates the pinion gears under the pony? Engine oil?

How about just using a hand suction pump? Squirt it into the level plug until it runs out, just like you would a differential or transmission. (using motor oil, of course, not gear oil)
