hiall. I have a 5j d2 and I want to find another d2 for a parts machine. My question is how much different is a 5u comparered to a 5j, are they close to being the same or is there to many difference to even consider a 5u as a parts machine. Sorry if this is a lame question but i really donot know. Thanks for any help.

Hi, engine is different, some running parts will fit you realy need to get parts books for both and compare see if what you need is the same I would look for a J model for your parts needs, maybe you could trade the U tractor for the parts you need or get a 5u to restore as well and wait for the J parts to
come along later :D hope this helps...

Hi--I have been trying to determine the same thing--i have a 5J1 to 1863 parts book and a late model 5U parts book---the only parts i have found with the same # are
steering clutch assembly, pivot shaft, and carrier roller
i am trying to obtain an early 5U parts book to see if there are more matches

Part numbers do not always tell the tale about interchangability. With improvements in design, the new part will have a new part number even though it will still interchange with the old one. I believe almost all of the large components will interchange.

We recently discussed an ebay auction D2 which had had an engine swap between the series and I remember a 212 grader which had had the same thing done.

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

Swapping parts between a J and U isn't all that bad. About the only major thing that got really got changed between the models is the diesel engine, other parts got improved. As long as you, for example use the complete transmission from one it'll fit the other while the lids themselves may not interchange with each other. Finals had a few improvements but will interchange, again as a unit. Brake drums/baskets ( I think) will interchange and those are getting harder to find.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that complete units will interchange while single components within those units may or may not. When you look at the parts books the numbers may not match but quite a few of the parts will fit. Sometimes parts numbers reflect upgrades or improvements to that particular part. I've looked at bits and pieces that appear to be the same but with different numbers and wondered if the difference was just in the metallurgy or heat treatment.

When you go to swapping parts back and forth a tape measure and good calipers or micrometer set will usually tell the tale.
