New Member, now I have been bit by the Cat bug for sure. When you start the old girl up in the morning with the trusty poney motor and she starts the diesel it makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up... I have a 49 d47u, slobbers a bit but running her this weekend yeilded a large oil leak somewhere at the back of the pan. When I say oil leak she is more than dripping out between the bellhousing and pan. No oil in the clutch housing. Have not checked the breather in some time, but oil pressure has always been real good but for now it would put the Exon Valdez to shame with the trail of oil coming out. I use Cat 30 wt oil, may need to build a refinery. Any ideas before the pan comes off?

If oil is not as far back as the bell housing then it could have a cracked pan esp. in the area where the equalizer spring goes under it. I,ve seen problems in that area a couple times if I recall. Also could be the gasket back there blowed out and letting it leak. It,s just a check and find now so maybe you can clean the oil off first if you have a pressure washer or steam jenny and then start it up and observe where the leak is coming from. Let us all know what you find.

Cracked pan hmm, I did pressure wash a bit but the leak is up between the spring and the pan, no way to see what's there unless I pull the springs out of the way?

Nothing else to leak where you describe except for the pan being cracked:(

go ahead and jack it up and remove the spring. Not sure how repairable a crack in this area is. Sure would be nice to get a good pan instead.

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

Thanks ccjersey am waiting for my serviceman's manual to come and hopefully in the next week I will be spending some bonding time with the old girl, she's put on a little weight so lifting her up ought to be fun. Will keep you posted and it looks like I am in the market for a pan. Come to think of it I do recall a large boulder being un-earthed while running her but no sign of scratches on the pan.

I sure am glad that my D4 7U has a skid plate to protect my Cat's belly.

way back in the late 60's i worked for a fellow that had a D4 you would fill her up in the morning and add another gallon or so after lunch the old girl finally put a rod thru the block old Jim welded it up and put a new rod liner and piston in and traded it off

I had D2 5U that had a lot of hours on it. The pan wore thin where it sets on the spring and cracked. I tried to weld it with little sucess and even had a profesional welder try it. It seemed like the cast iron was permeated with oil and would not weld with nickle rod well enough to stop the leak. A good pan is probably the best answer.

If there is a lot of dirt and the oil is migrating through the dirt maybe it is a leaking cooler line. If that tractor has them? My D2-5J lines leaked in the dirt that encased the cooler lines for so long. Took a bit to find the leak.
