Ol,G, yes good advice, always shut the fuel off and let all the gas burn up in a carb. before you stop it regardless what float is in it then if sitting there will be no gas in it to cause a problem.Yes also if it,s going to set for long periods of time then either drain the tank or put Sta-Bil in it.In my snow blower I always run the carb. dry after shutting the gas line off to the carb. and it always starts with a couple pulls after setting from one season to the other.

I will have to keep all this in mind for when I finally get the poor thing to run.
I just hope by that time I can afford the gallon of gas that it would take. Thanks all.

Jack, you got some good stuff there. Was the D2 your first cat?
My dad had a D82u when Iwas a kid, I loved that thing, wish I could of ended up with it. Oh well got to get my D2 running first than I will think about adding to the family.

Yes, slurrydog, that D2 is my personal first Cat. I had a JD before it that just wasn't up to the job.

All good advice from SJ. Ol_Grump & OldNuc, however the float in my carb is one of the newer plastic ones. Since the problem developed suddenly, I'm inclined to think something has stuck the valve open. It wasn't a case of continually running richer or having to shut off the gas to keep it from flooding, or anything like that. One day I cranked it up fine, started the diesel, ran the carb dry, used the Cat and parked it. Two or three weeks later it dropped so much gas into the cylinders that it locked the engine while I was cranking it. Seems impossible, I know, but I opened the drains and let a bunch of raw gas drain out. I'm just going to have to look at it and real soon.

There is an opening directly from the float bowl into the main barrel of the carb. If you have a needle stick open you will end up with the entire tank of gas in the pony.

Thanks, OldNuc, I sorta guessed as much, considering how fast it dumped into the cylinders. I left it with the gas off, fuel bowl loose and cylinder cocks open. I'm going to pull the top off the carb and see if I can do a quick fix on it. Darn, it was working so good before this all happened.
