There's not much information about the top rollers in the servicemen book but I have read about turning different seals in other areas.
I was under the impression that this was for the old style double faced seals that have metal on both sides. I didn't know you could install the modern style with the metal face on one side turned around.  Interested to hear more about this. 
Either way mine are installed with the big lip in and the small one out, am I going to have a problem on a machine that will see low hours?

Thanks for the compliments welcome to the group. I would love to have a d6 but just not in the cards for me. Looking forward to seeing your progress on your tractor. 
 

Like I said when you go to put grease in the roller it will push the seal out because there is no relief for air or grease. The service manual for the D4 tractors shows same style carrier roller and states to install the sealing edge towards the roller stand. Use a 1/2" or larger steel plate to set on the seal and hit in the center with a heavy hammer to drive it in or use an arbor press.

Ok got it, when I pull the blade mounts to put the track tin on i'll pull the rollers and install new seals. I have a bushing driver set with multiple size drivers to install the seal.
Thank you for the explanation and I'll check my d4 book. Just as a note, one of the seals in the roller was halfway out when I disassembled them. I guess I know why now.

Ten-4, the parts book kinda shows the direction of the seal also, if it's a clear photo.

I looked in the d4 servicemen book and it does say to put the lip towards the stand. My wife has a lighted magnifying glass and I looked in my 5j parts book and I can make out the lip pointing out towards stand. I'm happy to pay for 2 new seals and not have to deal with this problem later. Thanks again

I finally decided to get the winch brake relined. I got the brake material from the local parts store. I met an old mill right that had some tooling and rivets to do the brake band for my winch. He was very helpful and wouldn't take any money for his time or the rivets. We got the brake done and I showed him some pictures of my d2 project. He has an old crane around 1941 that he showed me.
Anyway the brake turned out great and I have another compartment sealed up.              

Your D-2 has come a long ways! Can't wait to see the finished product. Do you plan on using her? or display only for guys (and gals) to drool over? How many people hours into this project so far? Any future projects after this one? Thanks for sharing. JM

Well when I started I had in my mind it would be nice to have a d2 in good condition to use but after all the work I'm thinking it would be nice to sit in my shop chair and admire it. I'm sure it will get its paws dirty once in a while but its going to be a house cat mostly.
