Sorry I didn't actually count the bolts in the donor. It looked like double. I did notice in the pictures in the service manual that it has an image of the wet type brake band with what looks like a 12 bolt drum listed under the wet clutch section. Is it possible some early wet decks used the 12 bolt drum?

Hey PioneerNorth,
I talked with an Old Time Cat mechanic just now about your situation. Phil has found 12 bolt drums in wet decks before. If you desire to use them, he feels it would be ok. Clean the bolt holes out good. Yes... use locktight on assembling.

Parts book only shows 12 bolt drums on dry clutch machines. I don't see why you couldn't use them on wet deck. May be a horsepower thing but I don't recall 12 bolt drums and flanges getting tore up.

Hey PioneerNorth,
Phil had a question. Where the flanges 12 or 24 bolt that held the drums?

Thanks for the replies gentlemen. The flanges on both side of the drums in the running machine are 12 bolt. B

Hello all! I recently purchased a 14A. I am having some trouble with the steering clutches and I am wanting to remove and replace fluids and filters. Is the Best place to find info through threads or trying to find some literature to use? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi Joshw1998, here are the pics rotated. To avoid this problem take pics with the phone held horizontally, this should also be done when taking vids to avoid the blurred areas on the sides.

Answer to your question is BOTH!
You will want an Operators instructions book, a parts book that includes your serial number in the range on the cover Beware of books that say something like 14a1- UP if you have one that’s a long way UP from 1. Though it will probably be helpful for most parts, Caterpillar equipment accumulated changes and improvements fairly quickly and it would not be uncommon for one of the first parts books printed to not have all the changes after the first 1000 or so machines produced. Or such a book may be a later printing and have all the changes, depends on the revision that’s indicated by a number at the end of the form number on the cover somewhere. I just bought a manual like that and found that it doesn’t have many of the changes my machine has......bummer.
Then, the final pieces are Serviceman’s reference books for the tractor and some older ones have a separate book just for the engines. Not sure at what point they were combined into one but probably around the time your tractor was made.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

The original manuals are by far the best. The reproduction manuals are not so good. Look on ebay; original manuals can usually be found, it may take several attempts.
The most important one is the Operation And Maintenance Instructions, this is where you find capacities etc. You will also need a Parts Book and a Service Manual would be nice.
I have this one in my library and I can scan and post pages if needed until you find your own copy.

ccjersey is correct on S/N issue; my book does cover several thousand though. See the picture.
