Hyd cylinders? was created by Stonestacker
Hey guys this is a little off topic, I am building a log splitter and i need to buy
a 4" cylinder now what i need is one that will travel 18", is this called a 4" x 18"
stroke cyl and has anyone here delt with Dalton bearing & hydraulic.
I ordered one from them and afterwords i clicked on the dimensional data sheet
and noticed from pin to pin it was 10.250, now how can 18" come out of a 10"
casing. Thanks Bill:confused:

Just checked the data sheet. Add the stroke to the 10.250 to obtain the closed min length.

No, 4X18 is the specified bore x stroke. The spec sheet is marked on the cylinder specification drawing that the overall length is A+STROKE. The column headed "A" is the length to ADD to the stroke, 18", in this case to obtain the overall closed length which is shown as A+STROKE, or 28.250".

Sounds haywire to me....
A 4 x 18 cylinder would be a 4 in. dia. cyl. with an 18 in. stroke.
You would have to know the retracted length to get an overall extended length.
A typical 4 x 18 welded cylinder would have a retracted length (pin to pin) of about 29 inches.

I buy most of my hydraulics here....check them out.

That is what the data sheet is telling you, 28.250 overall length. It is a generic data sheet.
