I need your assistance in locating a source for a generator. It goes on D717A that Iam trying to restore. the gen was removed prior to buying the machine. This machine has been converted to direct start which indicate that the generator should be 24 volts in order to charge the bateries.
Used equipment ( Chartrand) suggested that a generator off a D7E or D8H would fit directly

I installed an alternator on my d6-9u factory direct start. Works great. Call Dana @ Florine Tractor. He had it in stock.-glen

The 24V generators for either the D7E or D8H are both single belt drive. Both have weird bolt on bracket mounting, the D7E attaches to RH radiator guard and the DH8 has a foot mount. The late D8H also has a 24V two belt drive foot mounted alternator.

Only the 6 & 12V generator units have gear drive.

Check with Florin tractor as 7Upuller suggests. I seem to recall there is a nice aftermarket 24v gear drive alternator unit for the D339. It is a bit pricey.

If you can use a belt drive generator, I have a good used 24 volt (Delco?) with single belt pulley and a patched up bracket that fits on the D320 engine. Turns out the starter I have is 12 volt, I was wondering why it was spinning the engine so fast!

just put a 24 vt reg in a 12 volt delco altt. it works
then go off the flat on the back of the fan pulley , for the belt drive and put a bkt on the cross pipe on the 17a and mount the alternator there

If you want to restore the tractor to keep the original setup, I have a late production 17A that still has the gear-driven generator. when my tractor was converted to 24 volt direct start, we disconnected the wires from the generator and made a bracket to install a belt-driven Delco 24v alternator. Put a pulley on the back of the old generator and used it to drive the 24v alternator. I later changed this out to a different setup and the generator is still mounted on the engine doing nothing. It probably needs reconditioning, as it hasn't produced electricity for years, but it is not frozen up. It just spins like normal,doing nothing else, when the diesel runs. I plan to remove it and cover the gear drive with a flat plate.

I saw in the rock & dirt mag an add pg 164 2nd dec issue 12 or 24 volt gear driven alt. there name & # is CME Miami Fla 303-633-1524.Probaly pretty expensive but worth it in long run.
