Hey gang,
I have to repair the corners on my bucket.
Front cutting edge. They have been worn away.
Not to the point of being cut into two pieces. But very worn.
What is the best and easiest procedure?

Lots of Welding?
Insert something and weld it on?

Dudley, if your cutting edge is badly worn at the corners you would usually replace it. Are you talking about a shovel bucket or a blade edge ? Regards Gordon.

Shovel bucket.
Rest of cutting edge in good Shape. Worn but I will not wear it out in my lifetime, Corners are just about shot.
No corner bits nearest tooth about 6" away. Folded/bent corner not built up.
At one point in time I suspect it had bevel to the inside. Due to wear BIG bevel to the outside now.


I was by the welding supply store today looking at some hardfacing rod. Yeeouch. $5.65/# So I did not get any. I have no idea exactly what I need.
I suspect it was what they had that they sell a bunch of.
Any Suggestions would also be appreciated.

If you are willing to trim out that section with a torch, you can always replace just that section with some short pieces of cutting edge welded into an L. It will be hard to slab something on and have it weld on properly and not stick out like a sore thumb on the sides and bottom of the bucket.

If I were doing it, I believe I would not cut the complete width of the cutting edge out. I would leave some of the thick part at the back of the piece in place and trim pieces of cutting edge down to fit in front of the remaining piece and bring the cutting edge back out to match the less worn sections.

You should be able to come up with some used cutting edges from a grader, box blade, loader or small dozer if you don't have anything of your own. Weld in place and bevel with a torch if there isn't an existing bevel you can use.

We allways have off cuts of cutting edge lying around. If you know any heavy plant firms or bucket repairers you could probably pick up some for the price of a brekky. I would then have suggested the exact same as CCJ. Be sure to give the weld a full prep and use low hydrogen mma. (stick) Regards Gordon.
