This is on the front cover of my Cat 22. Is this a nuisance crack or something that needs attention?

A contributing factor may be the bracket that holds up the radiator. It is broken and the center is missing.

Will either of these problems affect the operation of this Cat?

One possible cause is that it's always tempting to slip a hook over that thin edge of the cast iron bracket when winching up onto a trailer or using the Cat to pull something backwards attached to a chain. One guess is that many years ago someone did exactly that, and snapped out a big section of the casting.

If you do not correct crank will continue to migrate and could cross into critical area of the block. As it is that holds up your radiator and if you have ever removed it you know that radiator is close to 200lbs so it's probably worth the effort to clean it up and hit is with cast iron rod. I am not sure about the alloy content needed but there are some welders on this BB who can guide you.

From the looks of the crack, it IS in a pretty critical spot. From what I see the bracket the is cracked is a front support for the engine and and harder you work the rig the more this crack could be a problem. Research you area and the welders and find one that is well experienced in cast iron welding as cast is a very picky metal to weld. Experience will determine the difference of the weld lasting the life of the rig vs rebreaking in another spot close to this one.

There is an entire industry that responds to repairs in castings. It usually involves bolting, tie plates, welding and secondary supports. The firms specializing in this are probably beyond our means, but studying their web sites can suggest some supplemental repairs to welding alone.

The radiator support was broken in a similar fashion on my 22 and was mig welded after pre heating. The missing pieces were replaced with 1/4 inch plate and has stood up to a lot of punishment. As stated the radiator weighs a considerable amount and without the complete support bracket it looks to have broken your timing case. Ask on this site if anybody is parting out a 22 before welding you housings, it may be cheaper and will look better if good parts are around. You could get lucky.
