I picked up a track type tractor from the salvage yard good shape more or less i think it's a twenty serial number starts with PL looking for a second opinion and maybe a reason why the exhaust dumps down

looks like a 20 with different Radiator (or they ground off the cast words twenty), the only reason for down exhaust is for orchard work (so tree limbs dont catch the pipe)

Take a closer look at the engine and intake manifold though, it doesn't have the individually cast cylinder jugs like the L/PL Twenty does and the intake manifold is different as well, smaller diameter on the ends. Maybe it's had the engine replaced with one out of a Twenty Five or Twenty Eight? If the PL serial number is only on the rear end and not on the engine that may tell the story.

Replacement Radiator Panels, I believe is the explanation for lack of Twenty.

good eye, could be a 25 engine but not a 28. the 28 has a much larger water pump.

The engine is a 4.5" bore X 5.5 inch stroke. This is the early version of the engine that was used in the R3 and several Auto Patrols. The small Twenty type water pump was used on the earliest of these engines and then the later Twenty Eight type pump was used.

So that right there may explain the bare radiator side plates, if that radiator is original to that engine and the whole unit was transplanted from an elevating grader. In fact, my Cat No.9 Auto Patrols have those same bare radiator side plates too, but I do believe that similiar to the elevating graders the early Auto Patrols basically had engines put in them that were pulled from the "power unit" line, thus having no model designations on the radiators yet the base engines were the same.

The PL stands for made in Peoria. The steel gas tank says it is a "little Twenty" The "big" Twenty gas tanks were sheet metal.
