I disk a field today preparing for winter wheat

A few more and a JD

I pull a Canadian built John Deere 8 foot offset disk with connical blades behind my D2 5J. It sure can put a patch of sod upside down in short order. I've had the combination since about 1969 or '70. I've seen no reason to date to be upgrading since it can outperform anything else in the valley orchards.

Chuck looks good, better then our looks like. Lots of clods. They were going to put the wheat in today but now are going to wait a week and redisk it first.

Terry the field looks much better in the pictures. There are lots of big clogs about 5-6" Lanny plowed the field but didn't disk it right away. It will need to be disked again.

Nice pictures. One Cat and two Deeres. What year is the "A". It looks to a hand start, early 40's.
I never disk with a Track vehicle. Does the ride differ much whether your with the plow against the direction of the plow? Clay

OCB, the A is a 39. The crawler does ride better than a wheeled tractor. Disking with the furrows does give a better ride but doesn't break up the dirt as well.

Crawlers are the only way to go out here following heavy tillage.

Years ago we tried out a Stieger when they first came out and tried to follow behind the ripper with a 12' towner disc pulled by the 4WD, I ended up hitting by head on the celing of the cab and hearing all kinds of bad noises comming out of the front end as I crossed bowling ball size chunks of soil. We got 100' into the field, unhitched that tractor and creeped out as slowley as we could and hooked up an old D7 to the disc and told the dealer to come pick up his toy.



Here is some dust and dirt clods for you. The Dirt clods that are sitting next to the D4 were actually jamed between disc blades keeping the disc from turning. We had to use bars, chisels and sledge hammers to break those out of the disc.
