Steering Clutches-D42T

My clutches are out.

I have a feeling the fun is just beginning. I measured the distance between the pressure plates on each side of the discs and each measures 4-1/16 inches. No springs appear to be broken and the drums appear to be in good shape. I thought that there might be a lot of wear on the outside of the drums. I really do not see any.

There is a "lip" at the outer edge of the drum, but it does not look like a worn groove and the surfaces on the left and right appear to be uniform.

Taking the clutches off the shaft will be a challenge. I may bring in the calvary for that and take them down to a buddy's shop.

I estimate the two trunion shafts took no less than 750 whacks with the slide hammer on the hardened all thread. I may loose my hearing prematurely due to it. Next time I will start with hearing protection.

I will post pictures...computer woes at the house, (Windows ME operating system).

I must say she looks a little abused sitting there without her bonnet and opened up and torn apart. I must also say that I am happy to be this far. That said, I know I will have some parts questions at the least.

If anyone does business with a trader near South Webster, Ohio-send me a PM. I will share some information with you.

My best and my thanks-

I think you mean 3-1/16 in. on your clutch pac measurement;)
Worn out replacement dimension is 3-3/32 in.

No-the out to out was 4-1/16...plate to plate. I noted the "4" because I knew the measurement inidcated in my service manual, "A" was 3 inches and some change.

Somewhere it I think I have read that the discs and spacers can swell from moisture over time...I don't know if that is due to the rust between them or swell.

Nonetheless, I am replacing the discs/spacers with bi-mtls anyway. Salty on price, but I will be happy I did it after all is said and done.

OM-incidentally...or not, thanks for your suggestions on even the seemingly simple questions I come up with.

Hmmm, this is the chart I have been using and I don't recall having a problem.
Don't have any laying about to go check either, they're all in tractors.

Get a count of how many discs and assemblies are in there. Should be eight of each per side for standard pac.
