i pulled the steering clutches out of a freinds d 5 for him damn those things are heavy:eek: my question is how do i dissasemble the unit ive got the bolt
out of the shaft but i havent been able to get it out
also do the tension springs have keepers on them like valve springs

Yes they have keepers in them to lock them in. At the dealer we had a factory tool which was a round plate with holes in it spaced to set down over the retainers and then you put the whole clutch pack under our press and the springs were pressed down till the keepers could be removed and then let it slack off so you could finish disassembling the pack.You did it in reverse to assemble the pack and we had some extra drums to line the discs up.

Here are a couple of pics of a homemade tool like SJ is talking about that I made for doing D-2 clutch packs... you could make one for the D-5. It is a very safe and efficient way of assembly/disassembly.

BC, good job there with the plate and it looks almost like the factory tool. There was plates to fit all the steering clutches right on up to the D9.They were even painted blue like yours.

The clutch is mounted onto a carrier shaft that bolts to the bevel gear flange, this shaft has to be pressed out before the clutch can be stripped, from the bolt end you will see 2 5/8" unc pulling holes, or just jig it up under a 30 ton press and pop it out,they are big clutches for the size of tractor,

p.s. I have just rebuilt a D5 tractor and have some good pic's if it helps any I will post.

That clutch is a press fit on the shaft, you will need hydraulic puller which adapts to those two 5/8" bolt holes to pul lit off, put the end bolt and washer back in position with about 1/4" clearance to pull .
You will then need an adpater to fit the retainer bolt hole to press the clutch back on again to a specified pressure, yes I know that some just drive the retainer up tight, I've seen too many come loose to take chances.

Sorry gents, I'm looking at the wrong tractor, you can get the shaft out on a 30 ton press, but its wise to use the correct gear to press back together again.

all ive got is a 20 ton otc bottle jack press do yall think it will be enough to press the shaft out ????? mines biggerthan the one pictured if that helps

20 Ton is the recommended install press.......may take a bit more to get it apart.
Also it is recommended to draw the shaft into the hub come installation time using 1 in. 14 thread and hollow cylinder......you run the risk of distorting the drum if you press from the shaft flange side.

If you do elect to press from the back be sure to support the center hub area around the splined hole and protect the dowel pin.

One thing to be sure about if you fit new release bearings is the correct position/direction of the bearings in the carrier, it say's thrust side but take time to make positive its facing the correct way, if you need any info I do have all the spec's, I also have 2 new release bearings if you are stuck.
